Moving Off In 2nd Second Gear

i find that my audi a4 moves off quite easily and much smoother (in normal standard conditions) if i always move off in 2nd gear, instead of 1st gear. A slight dab of revs at the same time of releasing the clutch from its biting point gives a very smooth ride from 0 - 25mph. does this damage anything at all or will it cause excessive wear?

This will put increased wear on your clutch.

thanks for that. will never do it again. What about shiftig from 2nd to 4th? or 3rd to 5th? also increased wear on clutch?

If you switch when the revs are high enough, it's OK to jump over a gear. The V6 should have enough torque for that. I switch, for example, from 4th directly to 6th with no problem. However, when you do this, make sure that the revs don't drop behind some 1500, otherwise the engine will struggle and clutch will wear.

However, I fully agree that moving off in 2nd is bad practice and will always lead to premature clutch wear. Don't do this, unless in winter when there's slippery snow on the road.
