Sorry to hear of the problems you have had. Expectation of how a vehicle or system performs against it's characteristics is something that crops up from time to time. Your expectation is that the steering should be smooth at all times, but where has this expectation come from? because it is a quality brand? I have never worked with mercedes but I emailed a friend in Australia who has for many years and his comment was that he had seen this before on a few cars and that it had never been resolved, although his gut feeling was that it was down to tyre choice and had made improvements by swapping wheels/tyres on vehicles that had shown this problem. When a customer comes to a dealer with a concern it is upto the dealer to determine if it is a "fault" or a "manufacturing normality" (characteristic) if it is determined to be a manufacturing normality then because of expectation the customer feels as though he is being fobbed off (in my experience) If the dealer has actually said and confirmed that it is a fault then I would contact the customer service and give them three hits at rectification or the vehicle would be rejected.I recently purchased a motorcycle and my expectation was that it would be smooth throughout the rev range, wouldn't burn my knees with the heat from the engine and would handle well in high speed bends, it did not reach my expectations so I sold it and got something else.
I have just had a call from another merc tech who has told me that the alignment of the steering joints to the steering box on this model are critical. Now if they have replaced these parts it may have rectified the origonal concern but if the joints are not set correctly........................................?
