Default hello everybody! and winter tires discussion

Hi! I'm the proud owner of a 2006 A5 with about 8500 miles on it, and love it. No problems, other than the usual (I've been lurking for a while). I learned about the need to add a quart of oil every thousand miles, amost the hard way, but car seems to be better than ever. One problem i've been having is figuring out winter tires. I live in los angeles, so I bought the car with "summer" tires, which has prevented me from getting up to the local ski areas (or any ski areas). The dealer said that the cars don't fit any chains/cables made, but i've found some that do. there are 3 options --1.) getting new tires, although the stupid law in ca is that you have to have chains in the mts. and winter tires have a different clearance, making chains also a quandary 2.) use something called the "autosock" or 3.0 SCC superZ cables made for low clearances. i've gotten both of those, and feel good about my protection in a blizzard. However, I'm nervous about driving from LA to Colorado on my big, fat performance summer tires. The dealer was notably unhelpful when I asked if they could get me at least all weathers, saying that "they're not all that much better anyway. Well, I leave in the a.m. and I'll let you know how the A3 performs on these tires going through the mountins. I may post this generally, as well.
