Question Overheating problem. 2002 A4 tdi130.

Hi folks, having problems with my climate control and coolant system. A couple of times recently I have had a cooling water low level alarm on my dash. I have not found any leaks and have topped up the header tank. No more problems for 6 weeks or so, then recently my temp guage went sky high and the alarm occurred again. There appeared to be adequate water in the header tank. I stopped the car for a couple of minutes and the engine cooled down.

I took it to a local mechanic ( am fed up with prices charged by audi dealers). He changed the thermostat but I am still witnessing the same problem. It happens mainly when I am giving the engine a bit of stick, overtaking etc. It also occurs when I turn the climate control up to maximum temp, I also appear to be getting no hot air into the car. My mechanic says it may be the cimate control unit as their is no hot water flowing around the heating circuit part of the cooling system. I am loathed to take it to an Audi main dealer and be charged a fortune.

Has anybody out there got any ideas? Please help.

Cheers, Steve

The water pump impellor is slipping at higher rpm, check for coolant circulation returning to the header tank and DONT REPLACE THE CLIMATRONIC UNIT.You will notice the return flow is ok at idle but when you increase rpm it reduces the flow as the plastic impellor slips on the knurled cam of the water pump.

Many thanks for the advice, it certainly makes sense. Would it effect the lack of hot air in the car though?

If the coolant cant be pushed around the system then the thermostat wont open and the high temp will stay in the engine and not up to the heater matrix or if it does it will take alot longer,by this time your engine temp will be high and you will be over heating. You can check this by feeling the lower hose from the stat and it will be cold were the top hose will be red hot.
