Bouncing Idle

hello to all.
right down to things, can anybody shed some light on an intermittent idling problem im having on my 99 1.6 se.
it tends to bounce from say 8 to 12 rpm when either stood still or when changing gear. when stood still i find if i bring the clutch peddle up to biting point to lower the revs this seams to cure it........ till next time.
any thoughts will help save my sanity.
