Audi A4 Starting Probs

hi all. i have a problem starting my 1996 a4 tdi 1.9 Occasionalyy, and more frequently lately, the imobiliser light flashes on the dash after turning the ignition on, and when starting then the car will turn over and start but for about 1 second before cutting out. I have tried the other key and this doesn't make that much difference. It took me 15 mins to get it started yesterday which was a little frustrating. any ideas
