Hi, newbie here with a question. I bought recently, one month ago, a 1997 Audi A6 2.8 Ouattro Avant. It had 93k and was well cared for including 3k motor oil changes. I changed motor oil/filter 1500 miles ago. Today I checked the dip-stick and was a bit surprised to see that the oil was down by one quart! I checked to see if there is leakage and there is none.
Upon search inquiry here and at another Audi forum, again I was surprised at similar responses to oil consumption. Not only the earlier 2.8 engine, but also the later 2.8 and a few 1.7t owners also reported high oil consumption. An Audi tech posted a response saying that Audi expects 1 ltr. oil consumption for every 1000k Can this be normal, and if so why? And, will catylitic converters have less life span as a result of the high oil consuption? |

Looks like it is normal!! I am yet to hear a justification or solution for this problem. |

In addition to what appears from normal to be high oil consumption, at least for my Audi, I am also seeing coolant loss, not much, but I have had to add coolant which means head gasket issues. This car was not abused by the previous owner, it has now only 96k and in nice shape. Also worn are front end suspension parts. I have owned many cars from new and never had any of these issues, even at 200k, and am becoming disappointed in this car very quickly. I bought it with 92k thinking it should be trouble free for at least another 60k, the usual time one begins to replace front end parts, but head gaskets, front end parts, and high oil consumption, had I known, I would have steered well away from this car. |
