Default 91 Audi 100 - major grease along front axle

We have a 91 Audi and noticed smoke coming out of the hood - upon further inspection we noticed a real thick grease all over what seems to be the front axle area - My view is from popping the hood and directly under the engine -

Any ideas on what this is ? Seems to have "Puked grease all over"

Please offer any insight

Thanks

kind regards

dc

Sounds like its a split cv boot.
Turn the front wheels on lock and have a good squint around the driveshafts.
Seems to be more common for the outer (wheel end) ones to go..
