05 A6 3.0 dies intermittently

Hi I have an 05 A6 and it dies intermittently while it is being driven.

It always starts ok but ofter a few minutes, the engine dies. The dashboard goes off as well. Once I leave for a while, 5 - 10 mins , it runs ok till the next blackout. This can be 2 - 10 mins. I have had it checked of several diagnostic machines and the only faults are the intermittent faults.

A while ago rats gnawed the fuel gauge cable which has since been fixed. I have checked the cables in the engine bay and can't seem to find any exposed cable. Could the fuel pump cable have been affected?

Does any one know what the issue could be?

Have taken the A6 to the mechanic and from what he says he is seeing a spike in the line and this is causing the gearbox TCM to shut off power from the engine.

The alternator voltage regulator was checked and is meant to be ok. He is proposing introducing a dc surge suppressor in the line to prevent the TCM from shutting down, but I am more anxious to find out what is causing the spike.

Does anyone have a similar experience?

Ok great info but you need to simplify this by erasing all the faults and ensuring good battery voltage
From first inspection I would focus on the gearbox control unit as experience tells me over voltage codes indicate internal defect of the control unit.

Clear and drive until the fault reoccurs then re post the log

OK. SO it turns out that it was the alternator.

I don't have the full details yet but it appears that the alternator did not appear to have any any problems when checked (it was charging etc), but as a last resort was swapped . Once this swap was done all issues disappeared.

The battery manager history will show any voltage fluctuations from the alternator so I would still rescan after 1 week just in case.

The airconditioner is still not cooling (Fan comes on).

Please what can the issue be. Apparently there is power getting to the sensor indicated here:
