Hi,
I am looking for some help. I have just bought this car. My Audi A6 Avant features the Audi MMI system and has phone preparation for a Nokia 6230i. The problem is that the phone will not connect with the MMI system. It will work when I receive or dial a call, but I cannot use the MMI system to accept or finish calls. Also it will not read my SIM card. Am I doing something wrong or am I missing something? I have tried to pair the 6230i with the MMI system, but it says that it cannot find any devices. The 6230i sits in a Cullmann cradle in the centre armrest. I have also updated the MMI software from 2004 to 2007. Any help would be much appreciated. |

goto mmi and default settings then turn ignition off and on then pair phone within 5 mins or repeat again
Known limitations 1 The call records are carried forward in the wrong order. > Activate the ‘re-sort call records’ function in the menu in your vehicle. This function is not available with all specifications. 2 If the mobile phone is in UMTS mode, the signal-strength display becomes empty. 3 If the mobile phone is connected to the vehicle as soon as it is switched on, no phonebook is transferred. > Wait at least a minute after switching your phone on, before connecting it to the vehicle. 4 After the phone has been connected to the vehicle, it may periodically restart itself. > If this happens, delete the call records from your phone. 5 For incoming calls, it is possible that just a '+' is displayed in the vehicle. 6 After removing the connection from vehicle to phone, the voice quality of telephone conversations may be impaired (echo at the other end). > If this happens, restart your phone. 7 For incoming international calls whose number is not displayed, the '+' is not inserted. It may not be possible to call this number back from the call records. 8 In the phone settings, the functions 'Activate screensaver after...' and 'Stand by after...' must be deactivated in order to maintain a constant connection between the vehicle and the phone. 9 Companies may deactivate the Bluetooth function on staff phones ("IT Policy"). > Contact your system administrator. 10 Mimium required software version. With older phone software versions sporadic bluetooth-disconnects may occur. 11 If the telephone is updated with ActiveSync ®, depending on equipment and phonebook size, you may experience intermittent breaks in the Bluetooth connection. > If this happens, reduce the quantity or length of entries in your phonebook. 12 Waiting calls can not be replaced/rejected etc: - On the whole, phones sort the phonebook in order of first names. - During callsetup sporadic noise may occour Bluetooth capabilities of second-generation mobile phone preparation The second generation of mobile phone preparation has been supplemented with a Bluetooth interface in the Audi A2, A3, A4 and TT, R8 and A5 without navigation system from production month 02/04 and in the Audi Q7, A6 (C6), A8 and A5 with navigation system upon its introduction as an optional extra. We recommend that you connect your mobile phone, as before, to the vehicle's external aerial and operate it using a mobile phone adapter. What’s more, the mobile phone’s electricity consumption is very high when running Bluetooth, which reduces battery life. When using a mobile phone adapter, the phone is charged while the hands-free function is used. Electromagnetic fields can be generated when using mobile telephone systems inside a vehicle. We therefore recommend that you only use your mobile phone in your car via a mobile phone adapter. Mobile phones tested with Bluetooth® for the Audi A2, A3, A4, TT, R8 and A5 without navigation system

I am in the process of ordering a 2008 A6, and had similar concerns about which MMI options to take, how they actually work, etc. I will be taking the full MMI GPS+ etc. Did you get your 6230i to work finally (I have the same phone)? and how "well" does it interface with the MMI and display? another option that i thought of which you might know about.... the audi music interface. wondering if that works well? i have seen that it only works for 4th generation ipods. and does this cable, also just work with a USB stick, with lots of tracks on it? Thanks for any feedback. |

Hi there,
I discovered that my problem related to the fact that the MMI system was not compatible with the old GMS phone system in the old model A6. If you are ordering a 2008 model, you should not have any problems. If it were me, I would go for a Bluetooth system that is part of the MMI. Good luck |

No it does not apply, the Integrated handset is the motorola handset in the armrest and this can receive texts. The cradle plate with cradle attached for your 6230i does not receive texts.
You could upgrade the phone module and make some wiring changes to get the SAP profile phone system and this would give you text messages on your MMI and it would do away with the need for a cradle for your Nokia. Purely bluetooth, but the car is making the calls, not your phone, so the battery of the phone is not drained and the signal strength is based on the car antenna.

SIM access profile is available in all new Nokias and Siemens Benq phones, also the HTC PDA Phones support it as well.
Basically the phone prep clones the SIM and number from the phone and transfers it to the car, the GSM section of the phone is thenm shutdown so it no longer makes any calls, so saving on battery and not reliant on signal strength of the phone. The car is now the phone and the roof antenna is used for making calls. SO excellent signal strength. Also text messages can be recieved on this system. The phone book of your phone is also transferred to the cars MMI for access to mumbers etc. You could also send text messages if you had the optional handset in the armrest (not the old motorola one, but a new handset). If you have this phone prep and don't have a SIM access profile phone it will work in teh same fashion as you have now but over bluetooth only. Pros Great signal strength No battery use of the phone No Cradle required SMS text messages viewable Cons. Text messages received in the car stay in the car, not in the phone Received/Missed/dialled etc also stay in the car. More expensive than the standard prep. Limited number of phones, mainly all Nokias

Craigb,
Just in process of ordering new A6 and choosing which phone prep to go for....Have a Nokia 6230i which I believe has SAP. You mention with the bluetooth mobile phone connection (£650 option) you can receive SMS, but can you send them from the MMI? Also you mention they stay in the car as well as missed calls etc...No way of synchronising with the phone before you disconnect from the vehicle? |

You require an SAP handset to compose text messages. I have recently fitted one in my car, you can order the SAP system with the handset. I don't know of anyway to synchronise the phone and cars calls lists etc.
