Default On Holiday Auto Gearbox Failure HELP!!!

Please can someone hlep?? I am on holiday in Italy and all was fine until my 2003 Audi A6 1.9 TDI Auto Mantronic Gearbox failed - it has done 100K and the car has just been serviced by AUDI!!

A few days ago it started to judder whilst under acceleration as if it was jumping to the next gear ratio or somthing was slipping, however it was smooth when the cruise control speed regain was selected - i think because this used less acceleration\Torque??

Yesterday whist under moderate acceleration with it in Auto it juddered more violently and l lost all drive, I switched across to mantronic gear selection but still no drive and the gear numbers on the dash 123456 started to flash. I cruised to a halt with the engine running fine but unable to rev past 1200 RPM.

I have euro brakedown assistance who have recovered to a local garage who havent a clue but will transport to an Audi dealer, but the problem is that Audi in Italy are all closed on holiday for 2 weeks except for 20 & 21 Aug!!!

Please can someone offer any advice to help stop me getting ripped off as I am at the mercy of the locals who dont speek much English and i dont speak much Italian!!
Apart from that the Holiday is great weather lovely!!

Sorry to tell you this but your gearbox is toast! only option would be to recover the vehicle home.

Ok thanks, I have euro assistance to recover to UK and am expecting that to be the case once the local Audi are back off holiday. You dont think theres a chance it could be an electronic control of the gearbox as there were no mechanical failure type noises?

Still hoping!

From your description of events where you lost drive this would lead me to expect a mechanical failure, if it were purely electronic control it would run in emergancy running and would just feel under powered because the correct ratio would be difficult to determine. the diagnosis route would be to check the fault memory of the gearbox nd engine electronics then take a sample of oil from the gearbox, any even small metallic objects would indicate a failure of some kind. Good luck.
