Check engine light won't come on

You might think that this is good problem to have, but my 2000 Audi A-6 won't pass inspection without it coming on. I called the dealer today, and he said a new computer for my car would be $4000. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Have you had the car VAG-COMed?

I do believe my mechanic, an Audi-VW specialist, had this test done. He couldn't find a computer with the same amount of miles(or in the same ballpark),so he suggested I go to the dealer.

I do believe that the engine check lamp in your market can be adapted in or out, may be worth investigating.
