Default Chipped 1.9tdi or unchipped 2.0tdi?

I am about to change my 1993 80tdi (156,000 miles, 50+ to the gallon). I need to keep the economy and more power for towing a caravan. I believe that from 2005 the 1.9tdi engine is only available with 115bhp. The 2 litre tdi offers 140bhp. I wondered if it would be cheaper (and more economical) to buy a 1.9tdi and have it superchipped rather than go with the 2 litre tdi. I have read comments concerning a number of weaknesses with the larger engine, especially oil consumption. My 80 uses half a litre every 10,000 miles.
Any opinions would be most welcome.

Default

I used to run a Seat Ibiza with a 1.9TDI 130BHP engine that never used a drop of oil after it was run in and offered decent in gear acceleration. It did suffer a lot from turbo lag with a very noticeable surge when the revs rose above 2,000rpm that would make my wife feel ill on long journeys with lots of stop/ start driving. My average MPG was always in the high 50's or low 60's.

I now run a 2.0TDI in an A3 and would never go back to a 1.9 TDI. Yes, the 2 litre drinks a LOT of oil - it has been as high as half a litre every 4,000 miles or so and the MPG is now down around the high 40's so my running costs have gone up quite a bit (the oil itself is £15 a litre). However, the engine is far more refined than the old 1.9TDI. Although turbo lag is still there it is far more subtle and often goes unnoticed. This engine is 170BHP and so packs a lot more punch but along with that it sounds much less "agricultural".

So in summary the only weakness with the 2.0 is the oil consumption but everything else is a different league to the 1.9 variant so my advice would be to get a 2.0 litre as long as you do so expecting to top it up with oil roughly twice as much as you are doing now.
