Temperature Guage problem

I've got an A4.
When I start the car in the morning and start to drive the guage behaves normally, until it reaches 75 degrees, the guage then drops back to 50 and doesn't register for the rest of the trip.
Anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this, and is it easy to fix?

I have a 2004 A4 1.8T and one or both of my gauges for gas or engine temp work intermittently and set off warnings. I wonder if it is a faluty sensor or electrical malfunc.
