help please

i had an issue with the ashtray cover not opening on my A4, so i tried to remove the housing unit.

i made progress by removing the trim from around the gear selector, and undoing the 2 bolts holding in the ashtray unit.

lo and behold the ahtray wont come out fully, but now it wont go back in either.

i reckon i have to remove the aircon unit, is this correct??

and if so how do i do it

The climate control unit is held in with sprung clips, a sharp tug will release it. Sometimes it may need the radio pulling out to release the top.
