Default Bluetooth phones

I have a 2006 A4 CAB and a 2005 A6. Both have factory installed Bluetooth in the NAV system. They both worked fine with a Motorola V551 but when I changed to a Motorola V3XX they won't download the phonebook. Audi says that the V3XX only works in 2007 models and I would have to buy one to get the phone to work. Honest folks that's what the Customer Rep. told me. Has any one else experienced this problem? Both phones are on the approved compatibility list and cingular/AT&T is the carrier. Audi's position is that the phone on the compatibility list only works with the model year listed on the right of their chart. They say there is no backward compatibility.
