S4-3 spoke S sports stearing wheel question

On the left spoke on the stearing wheel is a "mode" button which when depressed is suppose to change through the different functions available ie radio, mp3, cd, phone etc.
When I depress mine, the display on the DIS states "No function"

Queried this at my local dealership (who are naff by the way & I didn't purchase the car from).
They said unless there is a phone connection installed (which I don't have) the mode button will not work.

Is this correct or are they fobbing me off???
