Dont forget that all the 1.9 TDI's, both VE and PD engine versions can be 'easily' tuned upto around 250bhp without melting or breaking anything.

Bolt on a VNT-20/22 turbo, larger injectors + FMIC, then remap.

What about the 2.5TDIs? Petrol is ok and all, but I think if I bought a petrol car, I'd really miss the immense torque of the diesel, and I think I'd lose that effortless 'takeoff' power diesel gives in any gear at any revs due to its torque.

Please advise.

The 2.5 diesel lump is a bit to heavy.

The 1.8T is a fantastic engine and will tune up to a higher bhp than the TDI's + there are lots of excellent mods available.

I think a highly tuned 1.9TDI will definately have the edge when it comes to torque.

There are people out there with 300bhp 1.9TDI's, but running more than 500 - 600nm torque is more than enough for the drivetrain.

Ah, I see. However you say the 2.5 is 'too heavy' do you mean physically in weight on in some other way?

My thoughts were a highly tuned 1.9 may blow or melt or implode, but since the 2.5 was bigger, thicker/heavier block etc that it would be able to take any extra punishment from bigger turbo's etc?

I mean the 2.5 lump makes the car a bit too front heavy.

It is a very strong smooth engine compared to the 4 cylinder versions, and probably will take more boost with a VNT-25 (if it fits in the engine bay), but the vnt-25 probably has a bit too much lag with it.

I think for day to day driving, a PD150 'VB' VNT-17 or VNT-20 is probably a good compromise between lag, charge temp and power.

The larger turbo's tend to give lower EGT's than a standard turbo.

I think 220bhp would be an ideal level of safe power for a 1.9TDI.

I have the 2.5 tdi and I love it! It's the first Audi I have owned so I don't know what the others are like in comparisment, but I do know you can tune the 2.5 to at least 240bhp, which seems enough for me. (when I get the time!)

240? That's v. good, considering the torque output of those engines too...
