I've finally gotten enough to buy an older A4 and am planning on driving it on mountain and coastal roads near my house. I wanted to make the right choice and have no regrets and was wondering if you could give me advice on which engine to look for to best suit what I will be driving.

If fuel is an issue then the 1.9TDI is got to be on your list if you think you want some thing to tune and want more power then the 1.8T is a must and better still the Quattro for the mountain driving.
If you want performance but not going to tune it and you want good power then the 2.8 Quattro 30v is a great car smooth with just about enough power to keep you happy. If you have more money and can stretch to a S4 then your have a big grin on your face.
