Default New with maintenance questions

I have a 96 2.8L FWD A4. I know the dealer says the tranny fluid is supposed to last the life of the car. I am at +140K on this lovely Audi and was wanting to change the fluid myself. I know I need to get the special tool for the drain plug but should I also replace the tranny filter? And what oil is recomended? I have a write up on the AWD model but is there any special procedures to this compared to the FWD model?
