1988 Audi 90 Check Engine Light Help

Hey guys, I own a 1988 Audi 90 and recently I changed my gauge cluster to another one because the odometer did not work before. I found out that the previous owner had removed the CEL light bulb prior to selling me the car, and now my car has the CEL on. Since it is pre 96' I can't use the code puller thingy. How do you guys go about pulling the code from the car? I need to fix this prior to emissions. Thanks for the responses.
