ipod - dension gateway 500 question

my dealer says in order to install the dension gateway 500, I have to have the glovebox version with the removable shelf inside, rather than the one I currently have with a fixed shelf. He says if I don't have it, then I need a completely new glove box at about $1000 just for the install. is this correct, have any of you had the same issue?

You only require the other glovebox if the Audi AMI unit is installed, the ipod holder is secured on the fixed shelf.

I have a fixed shelf and have just installed the denison 500 no problem.
