Experiences from installation in a Swedish 2005 A6 4F Sedan:
I know that many things has been said and done when it comes to this popular retrofit. But still there are details about the installation that can be discussed so I decided to post my own thoughts. Hardware installation: After finally receiving the stuff that I ordered; DVD NAV retrofit kit from Kufatec and a 2007 AS DVD from a guy at eBay I got straight to work. Yes I was thrifty about the DVD and did not by the 2008 version but there’s a lot of road construction going on in my area right now so I figured I rather wait for a while. The installation description from Kufatec was a bit vague about cable locations and no pictures were included. I looked in the workshop manual (Erwin) and the installation details became clearer to me. After 2 hours work the job was done without any injures or damaged parts. My only concern is about the GPS-antenna. In the Kufatec kit an OEM antenna (Kufatec labelled mouse) is supplied and Kufatec suggests placing it in the rear parcel shelf of the car. The original antenna however is placed in the rear window housing next to the third braking light. I did as Kufatec suggested but I will look into placing it in the original antenna position. In either case the cable for the antenna is far too long for booth these installation locations. Another detail that is odd is the mentioned torx screws, there are no torx screws! Forum Questions: Were did you place the antenna in your A6 sedan? How did you decide on what version of the NAV DVD that was best for you? Software installation:
Questions: Why does my Audi workshop manager look scared and say no when I ask him kindly to upgrade the software? Where is the Audi documentation regarding Configuration Management? q What hardware is compatible with a certain software build? q What is the functional difference (release notes) between one build and another? q How are the different builds related to each other (i.e. were do you find out that in order to update from 0500 to 3460 you must first install 2120 because…)? Maybe it’s time for a Audi Configuration Wiki? Economy: Kufatec kit 749.00 EUR Shipping 23.80 EUR NAV DVD (Shipping included) 77.00 EUR Firmware CD’s from Audi dealer 5.00 EUR Sum 854.80 EUR Price at Audi dealer in Sweden 3590.00 EUR NAV DVD at Audi dealer in Sweden 600.00 EUR Sum 4224.00 EUR Savings 3369.20 EUR If you don’t order the system with a new car you can add at least another 600 EUR for labour costs! Conclusion: Have fun and save yourself a buck! Kind Regards /MotorOla

Long winded, but good explanation.Ok you require sw version configuration, this means you need a zug bus list.the cd rom discs you need to further up date your mmi most network are discs ending with T and AA and one more disc to get your sw version to 5000s is 8T0.The manager should have no fear but you require master tech help to explain it.I cant post the zug list and wont (FACTORY INFO AND MASTER TECH ONLY)but the info i have given you is correct to up date sw versions for mmi high. The sat na cd rom can only be updated by replacing with year version ie 2008.fit the gps to the inside of the rear window near the aerial amps at the top and 2008 sat nav is the best VERSION

What exactly is a zug bus list and what is it used for? The least I expect in order to consider upgrading above 3460 is some clues to what difference it would make to my car. Perhaps also some hints about what hardware revisions that are required. I take it that you have successfully mounted the Kufatec antenna in the top window location since you give this advice? Did you find out the differences between 2007 AS and 2008 before buying the 2008 version? If so, how did you do that? /MotorOla

zug list is for mmi control unit mapping of hardware and sw versions.Post a full log of your sw versions and ill explain when i get a min. Please bare in mind that updating mmi sw versions can wipesome control units ie telephone and bose amp and ami.The sat nav cd rom differances are upto date map location 3d mapping tmc display graphic improvements,i dont own a audi a i am a audi master tech so maybe ask some of the owners running 2007/08 nav cd rom for the full changes. As for gps aerial the retro fit kit should explain the aerial instalation as all the rear windows have the position for the fitment and you just stick it there for the optimum signal.Again sw updates can be exspensive if they crash a file and where did you get your sw discs from out of intrest

As I see it the Component protection risk is one reason not to upgrade above 3460 as long as there is no open documentation on what HW/SW combinations that causes this. This information along with information about functional improvements could be placed in a Wiki and updated by users. This is what I mean with the Audi Configuration Wiki in my first post. I believe that open reliable information about this means increased Goodwill for Audi and attracts new costumers, also to the aftermarket business. The antenna is not original and does not have the same shape as the original. This is why I wonder if anybody has successfully mounted it in the original housing. Will it fit/work or will it cause bad reception compared to the parcel shelf installation as Kufatec recommends? I bought the CD’s from my local Audi dealer for 5 EUR as I wrote in my first post. /MotorOla

attachment.pdf sat nav.pdfthis is for the boot loader sat nav,but the coax and gps fitment can be used for your glove box mounted unit. The Component protection riskis minimum and can be unlocked via online 5051b dealer portol at a minimum cost, however the only control unit i have seen personally lock up is voice control.

The only thing that differs in my kit compared to the original is the size and shape of the antenna! Once again, will it fit? Maybe I will just have to try and glue it or something to prevent it from moving around inside the housing (Halter) because I can´t clips it. Now to the zug bus list, what can it do for us? the pdf was for assitance, anyway your running at zug level 731.You can update to 824 then to 921,only the interface will update and the tuner in your configuration by using firstly cd rom 4e0 906 961 aa and then 8t0 906 961.

If I understand you correctly the zug level 824 corresponds to version 4220 and the zug level 921 is 5150? What functions will be updated in the Tuner and Interfacebox with 824 and 921? Will it make any noticeable improvement to my car or can I just happily stick with zug level 731? Kind Regards /MotorOla

Spot on Motor0la,to be honest only the interface will update and there wont be anything exciting.Only higher spec vehicles see improvements with ami and bluetooth for example as you have already updated your network to its higest sw version bar the interface box.
