Given that the handbook and the dealers both say that anything up to 0.5l every 1000 km (625miles) is within tolerance I was just wondering what most people's oil consumtion is like? Mine was bought new last September and the oil consumption has gradually worsened from about 0.5l every 1800 miles to now using 0.5l in less than 500 miles (so has finally been accepted as a problem and has been booked in for diagnosis). As I typically do between 600 and 1000 miles each week I've been having to top up pretty much once a week - the oil level warning light comes on as frequently as the fuel light! As its now done 15,000 miles I would have expected any running in oil consuption to have passed by now. Certainly no car I've owned in the past 20 years has needed oil more frequently than 6000 miles and my last turbo diesel (Renault) went the full 18,000 miles between services without a top-up. It would be good to know what others are getting so I know what is considered to be normal.

Well, after over 7 weeks in the dealers I got my car back - it seems there was no oil control ring on one of the pistons! they couldn't find any sign of it, no bits in the sump etc so it looks like it came out of the factory without it!!! So much for audi being a quality manufacturer! Anyway, i've now done 2000 miles since getting the car back and the light hasn't come on yet so hopefully it is fixed. Interestingly I had two different courtesy cars, both 2.0 tdi and both needed the oil topping up while I had them (<3000 miles) so it does seem that excessive oil consumption is a feature of these engines.
