Default (mp3) cd changer problem

I bought a very nice A6 3.2 Quattro from 2005

but

I want to update the MMI and both the factory fitted cd changer as the MP3 cd changer dont work correctly, so I am stuck..
If I press "setup" and "return", the current config sees them both.. and gives my lots of info like version, manuf. date etc
I can load cd's in both of them but when I click the cd/tv button on my MMI it doesnt see anything. It doesnt even display the slots. As if they are not there or not hooked up, but they are (at least I think)

Unfortunately I dont have VAG-COM (yet) so I cannot investigate further, the dealer is busy the next 6 weeks and that is a long time to wait..

Any ideas?

Could this be a "component protection" problem? I read something about that subject

If you have a CD/TV button on your MMI then the CD changer wont play MP3, The later versions have a Media button that signifies that the CD changer is also an MP3 player

The MMI version is 0500 (yes prehistoric)

I bought the car as it is. I'm guessing that the mp3 changer worked before with the previous owner..
The dealer tried to update it for me, but they came back to me and told me the cd changer(s) dont work so they cannot update the MMI before fixing this. I guess they did something and now the cd changer doesnt work but I dont know for sure or what they did.. Now I have to wait 6 weeks before the continue

If I disconnect a cable of one of the 2 cd changers the whole mmi stops working. I thought I'd just disconnect one cd changer and maybe then the other one would work but no..

Yes that is old!!! They may have corrupted something while trying to update it which is why it wont see it.If you disconnect any part of the MOST system it will all shut down but you can remove a component and code it out so the rest works.
