I've a 6 week old A6 2.0tdi SE wich includes the basic CD based voice/pictogram sat nav system. It generally seems to work okay but has locked up a few times and will only work again if you turn the whole MMI off and on again. does this mean it was programmed by Bill Gates? Does this mean there is a fault or do they usually fall over? The other odd thing is that it has started defaulting back to "Deutchland" whenever I try to enter a new destination so I have to manually change it to UK, even though the language is still on english - any suggestions?

Its booked in for this and other issues for 12th Nov. I just wanted to see if others have had similar issues. Typically the satnav seems to have sorted itself out now and is working normally again. The other issues I'm having are:
Noise/vibration/harshness - I'm very dissapointed with the general harshness of the engine, especially whilst accelerating through around 2300 revs - very noisy and whole car seems to vibrate, especially noticable in 5th or 6th and going up hill when it takes longer to go through this rev band. Parking brake not releasing automatically. Its now happened about 10 times so more than once a week - makes you look like you don't know how to drive when you try to pull away and the handbrake won't release! Whining noise - particularly noticable on smooth roads at around 50-60mph, sounds like a failing wheel bearing as it really "sings" and resonates through the whole body. It doesn't manifest itself on rough roads though. I am wondering if this could be the tyres - I have had similar noises from certain tread patterns on previous cars. I've never had Conti's before but I've heard it said they can be noisy. Oil consumption - this is the first car I've owned in the last ten years that has needed oil between services. The 1l they give you with the car for topping up was all used up by 3,500 miles and its getting low on the dipstick again (5,500 miles) |

Hi again,
I can't comment on the 2 ltr engine but you would expect that the engine would have to work harder than the 3 ltr version. I have the answer for the Parking brake not releasing. I had mine booked in for the same fault and it is actually driver error. If you don't use the gas pedal ( like when setting of on a flat or slightly down hill road) the bugger will not release itself. Since it has been in and had a chat with the service manager, I am always using even the slightest amount of gas before releasing the clutch and it has always worked properly. The oil consumption should improve with mileage. If you look in the handbook, you will notice that it is probably within the manufacturer's tolerances. My 2008 Avant 2.7 TDI is my first diesel and I think it's very smooth for a diesel. Have not tried the 2.0L so can't comment on that. No strange noises except that the wheels are quit hard and noisy. My old C5 was alot quiter in that area.
Have only done some 300miles yet so cant comment on the oil issue either, I did have a C5 2.4 that drank alot of oil...I think its a shame that a new premium car should have such a oil consumption. I have Tiptronic and can confirm that the handbreak needs a tap on the gas pedal to release. I think it says so in the manual as well. |

Hi Mavala, Thanks for your advise. Since reading it I've tried it out. I tried bringing the clutch up slightly with no throttle and sure enough the revs drop but the handbrake stays on. Whilst in this condition, i.e. clutch slipping but handbrake still on, a touch on the throttle and the handbrake goes off. It doesn't seem to matter the order i.e. throttle first or clutch up first, the brake releases when the throttle is applied. However, sometimes it doesn't!!! Again yesterday it wouldn't release and I had definitely applied throttle first before letting the clutch out. No amount of throttle or clutch would release it. A message comes up on the DIS saying "release parking brake" and the only way to release it is to apply the footbrake and press the switch manually. It seems to be totally random when this will happen - in this case it was on a perfectly flat concrete surface but previously its done this on slopes in both directions. I'm now well into double figures of occurences in the two months since getting the car. Its booked in for Monday so we'll see what happens....
