Telephone question - what's the difference between....

......the two options taken from the brochure spec:

GSM mobile-telephone preparation, with hands-free and speech dialogue system for operation
of main functions, located in front centre armrest. Bluetooth interface and roof-mounted aerial
are included for optimum reception (a phone adaptor is required at extra cost. Please consult
your Audi Centre for details)

Bluetooth mobile phone connection, operated via the optional MMI High system and integrated
telephone voice-control system, including roof-mounted aerial for optimal reception. Must be
combined with MMI High (price quoted does not include this item). Please note that your
mobile phone must have Bluetooth SIM-Access Profile facility.

The first is £400 the second £650. I appreciate that the second requires the MMI high, but in terms of functionality. Does the second option require / include the centre armrest adaptor?

No it doesn't and you will require a compatible phone that supports SAP for full functionality, currently only certain Nokia and some siemen phones work, a list of phones is on Audi desktop ask the salesman to do a search for "SAP". Personal choice would be GSM but make sure they can supply a compatible cradle for your phone, they will need to asks the parts dept to check on epac.

Personally I think the SAP is a much better system and has the ability to also fall back to non SAP mode. So it works like the GSM system (cradleless) but also has SAP.

With SAP you no longer need to put the phone in a cradle for better reception and battery charging ast he car is the phone and your phones GSM section is disabled. Plus you get TEXT messages with SAP and you don't forget to take the phone out of the car when leaving.

This is true but be aware of the limited amount of compatible phones that give full functionality.

They are both good systems, thinking about it It's easier for me with GSM as I'm in and out of different cars on a daily basis so it's quicker to put my cradle and phone in. the text message thing worries me! There are much more important things to do in a car, like concentrating on the road!!

But all new nokias are now SAP and the SAP system is backwards compatible with other mobiles, so it will work like the standard GSM prep if your phone does not support SAP.
