I am no expert, but here are the basic differences as I see them...

If you are someone that likes to keep a car stock, the 4.2 is probably a better bet. In stock form it has 300HP on tap which is good for this car and its weight. Only drawback with the 4.2 is that is only comes in tiptronic, so if you are a manual person (like me) that won't do... LOL Another plus of the 4.2 is the wider fenders, tires and no turbos to worry about in the future as far as reliability is concerned.

If you don't mind tweaking a car, the 2.7T will allow much more power potential than the 4.2. There are very few mods out there for the 4.2 as far as power is concerned. I think someone was working on a supercharger kit for it, but I have not heard anything about this for a while. The 2.7T puts out 250HP in stock form, and by chipping it you can increase the power to 320HP. In chipped mode this car is a blast to drive. Add better intercoolers, exhaust and downpipes and the power increases quite a bit more. Then a turbo upgrade to K04s (plus fueling) gets you in the 400 HP range (ballpark). The turbos get a bad rap on the forums, but if you look after them they will last.

Another thing I would suggest keeping in mind... if you are a driver that prefers the sportier ride, I would suggest making sure the car has the sport suspension on it. If you are looking for a smooth ride the regular suspension will be fine. Unless you are planning to modify the suspension in which case the regular one would probably be cheaper to buy...

Also in the 00-03 range there was a body change... referred to as the "face-lift" which happened in mid 2001 I believe. The main difference is the square edge on the bottom of the front grill vs a rounded bottom edge and the exhaust tips being exposed after the "face-lift" vs hidden turn downs.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Default thanks!

can't thank you enough! you answered my question to a T!

I'm more of smooth operator then speed racer and my main concern is reliability.

so it sounds like the 4.2 is right for me.

well your at it what do you know about the 2003 4.2 in comparison to the 00-02' models.

thank you so much, seriously!

They are pretty much the same, but on the newer models 03+ you might get nicities like blue-tooth built into the car etc. Assuming the car had the option installed obviously.

This might help: AudiWorld - Model Guide
