I am looking at a 1999 audi a6 avant at a local dealership. The car appears to have been very well maintained (they have the service records from the beginning) and i was looking for advice. The car has 165000 miles on it and i was wondering if anyone had any tips on the longevity of the car. it is the 2.7 v-6. All the recalls have been addressed, steering work, etc. I would have to double check when the timing belt was last done but if anyone has the info on how long a timing belt job would last, that would be great. The only thing that really is a sticking point is an odor from under the hood that smells a little like burning oil/rubber/metal. I understand that it may be a leaky cam or valve gasket (from what i have read in posts) and that this may be common and just keep an eye on the oil level. I drove the car and beat on it a little bit, tested the tiptronic tranny and everything seemed to be working great. After the trade in from my wife's 1999 oldsmobile bravada, the car will only cost me $2600. I personally have run VW's for quite a while and the a6 avant is a perfect car for my wife-kid and groceries, etc. any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The miles are high for the year. It equals more than 18000 miles a year the average person does 12000. The timing belt should be done at 75000 miles 150000 225000 etc... they on average last 90000 but it doesnt hurt to replace it before it goes and ruins the water pump and heads. The smell your are experiencing could very well be the brakes. They would make a sulfer/rubber burning smell. It could also be the serpintine belt. The best thing to do is bring it to an Audi shop and have it looked over. They shouldnt charge you if you tell them you will have the car serviced by them. The car sounds like a good buy. here are some websites that should help you price it .
