I am wondering if it is normal for the transmission to shift automatically at low rpm from first to second. Then it holds 2nd and all subsequent gears as one would expect in the shift yourself mode.

Yep. This is normal. Part of the fuel savings program. If you want to hold 1st you really have to mash down and hold the accelerator. If you chip your main ECU you can also chip the transmission at the same time. This will let you hold 1st.
