Engine not starting when warm

Hi there,
I am new to this forum so bear with me. I have a 2000 plate A6. The problem I have is when starting the engine after it is warm. The car starts after a few attempts but when cold starts on the button - any ideas?

which engine you got in your A6 john ?? petrol or diesel ??
