Default Fault 17831/P1423/005155 - Secondary Air Injection System; Bank 1: Insufficient Flow

So I get this random fault code every once in awhile and I can seem to find the cause of it. I was wondering if it is anything worth worrying about.

Thanks
Micah

I'd think of a vacuum hose leak. Does your car run rough when this happens?

I have the same fault code on my 2000 Audi A4/2.8L. Was this fault resolved for you? Where are the common places for a vacuum hose leak? Is there a trouble shooting procedure to get to the bottom of these faults?

This website has lots of good troubleshooting advice based on your specific fault code.

Thanks. I took a look at the vacuum hoses and they look rotted with the cloth braiding on the outside flaking off. The consensus here is that it is a vacuum leak, a bad combi valve (whatever that is!) or the secondary air pump. I would think that since the fault occurs for bank one and two, that should indicate something that is common for both.

On my other car I can pull the vacuum source off of the inlet plenum and then pull a vacuum using a Mity-Vac to see if there are any leaks. Is there a similar test that can be done on the Audi?

I reset the light when I pulled the codes and it hasn't come on again in the last 70 miles or so of driving. Are there any other tests that can be done to try to isolate the problem before I just replace all the lines. That looks like a lengthy job which I don't want to do and then find it is the reservoir, a valve or air pump.

Is there a vacuum routing diagram and parts ID on line somewhere?

Thanks for the help.

Paul

mine was a bad hose. I ended up buying a manual to get the vaccum hose routing diagram.
