I have a 2004 A6 4.2 which now has 10K original miles. I am the first owner and the only driver. The vehicle has been back & forth to the dealer 4 or 5 times over the past 10 months trying to correct a mild vibration in the car. I feel this "chatter" in the steering wheel, however, it can also be felt throughout the entire car. We have changed steering rack, new tires, front left wheel bearing, many tire balances. Does anyone have similar experiences? Audi sent a technical engineer to drive the car and he claims that this is normal for my car and it is within Audi specs (although they can't give me these specs). Also, Audi now states that they are not going to spend any more money trying to fix this problem under warranty.

I've had a 2001 A6 Avant since last June and noticed the vibration on about the third day on a long highway trip. Talked to the dealer and they said "flat spots" on tires. Did lots of reading about the issue since then and it seems the problem goes a lot deeper than flat spots on the tires. Most seem to think balancing and road force adjustments are the cure while others contend this is the way the beast runs and Audi will do nothing to fix it. I went all out and got a new set of winter wheels and tires and the vibration was even worse than before. I'm not going to waste any more time or money trying to get to the bottom of it as obviously there is no real and long term solution. For an Audi tech to say that performance is within specs means they have given up on it as well.
