Well I will try this again.

I have a 4.2 sport. What engine mods do I start with. Exaust, intercooler, chip?
I need suggestions and types.

I dont want a super throaty exaust. Just that clean Euro V8 sound.

start with a chip for sure. GIAC has a really nice 4.2 chip in their lineup that'll give you +15hp and about +15 torque. If i'm not mistaken, your year A6 has the hidden muffler tips which would require you to get a body kit (or at least a new rear bumper) if you wanted an exhaust system.

>>intercooler on a normally aspirated car?
