Thinking about this black, sports seated 87k mi 2001 2.7, manual trans, as a daily driver, for under $17,000. Maintenance records are incomplete (for example, no info if timing belt's been changed). A lovely car, but what exactly should I fear? I'll do a compression check and the usual due diligence exam...what should I be worried about?

I'd check the front rotors as they are very expensive to replace on this model. Also make sure that both turbos are functioning properly. Air flow and other sensors have a way of going bad around this mileage as well. Have a diagnostic run to check out any fault codes. I would also check out the drivetrain and listen for a "howl" from the rear when driving as that is usually a sign that wheel bearings are going bad. Repair of both rear bearings can run very high as well.
Good luck! If this car checks out, you won't be disappointed.

Hey, Greenalfa, many thanks! (I had a grey w/red interior 1300 cc Alfa Giulietta Spyder looooong time ago. Sweet little car, but parking up on a hill was often useful.)

Actually my Spyder is very reliable. In fact, before I bought my Audi, I had a 1995 BMW 7401 (Black by the way) and it had so many battery and alternator problems that I once even had to take the '74 Spyder to give my wife a jump start in a parking lot......wish I'd had the sense to take a picture!
