Default Replace headgaskets on 2.8 or swap engine?

I have a 1996 A4 Quattro 2.8 with blown headgaskets it has 184000 miles. I am not sure weather I would be better off tearing the motor down and doing the gaskets and some headwork on a motor with 184000 miles for a few $100 or if Im better off buying a used motor with less than 75000 miles for $1000-1500 (prices I've found within 100 miles). I have even thought about seeking a rebuid kit but not sure if want to get myself into a complete motor rebuild or where to find the parts to do so. I havent even found were to get head gaskets yet.

I purchased this car for dirt cheap with blown head gaskets I know the heater core was just replaced which someone appears to of forgotton to bleed the air out ooops. So as far as I know the motor may have been ready to blow anyway so I would like to know what your suggestions are. Thank you

Paul

Actually after calling around and quoting a bunch of people i found out it was cheaper for me to buy a new engine then rebuild the one i had with blown headgaskets. I'll be getting my car back tomorrow ...I'd definintally go with a whole engine replacement, mine total will cost around 1600$

That is a very good price for getting the motor replaced. How much of that is labor?
