My 1996 automatic A6's latest batch of problems:
ABS warning light intemittently keeps coming on for varying periods - particularly when I start up the car and when cornering - and then sometimes it will just go away. Our trusted garage assures us there is nothing mechanically wrong with the brakes but after much consultation with his trade mates the mechanics solution is an new ABS pump(?) which plus VAT and labour will cost over £1000 to remedy- does anyone have an other suggestions PLEASE? Then there is a knocking/thumping noise from the front offside wheel when I reverse around corners - can anyone tell me the bad news on this 'fault' (This is the car which once locked out the mechanic carrying out the MOT - he said he just turned his bak on it and it locked itself - with the key still in the ignition!). My children and I are very attached to the A6 but it is on the point of being traded in for a 2003 A4 automatic. Finally I must agree that having owned VW/Audi cars for the last 20 years I am beginning to perceive a drop in the quality of the product. Thanks ![]() |

I would get a second opinion from a VAG specialist before forking out for a new pump which may not be required as it may be something simple like a ABS sensor faulty or slight fault in the cable if you say the light comes on and dissapears when you corner ...
If it does turn out to be the pump £1000 sounds way too high to replace it anyway so get some quotes elsewhere before commiting to anything!!

It is possible that the CV joint is making the thumping noise. The ABS light might be on because of the CV joint as well, if that problem even exists. I would definitely check the sensor first. Everythin else is much more costly.
