Trans Noise

Hi everyone,
I have a 96 a6 wagon fwd. Recently when I put the car into park it made a squealling noise. As soon as I shifted out of park and into a gear the noise stops. Seems to drive and shift well but the noise appears in park and and also neutral settings. Any thoughts as to twhat this might be?

I have a 96 a6 and have the same symptom....no clue

Turns out the noise was being cause by the ignition switch. The switch had become faulty in that it was'nt disingaging or flipping back to it's neutral position once the car was started If you've ever tried to start your car when it was already running...same noise. I still don't understand why it only made the noise in neutral or park which is why I thought it to be the trans
