Will check my levels at the weekend - now done another 500 miles or so - talking to folks at work who run ford diesels and peugeots - ALL have said they never top up between services - (12k in Fords case and 20k in Peugeot)

Thanks for the update, please keep me posted. Audi keep telling me it's normal it's even in the handbook that it might but that doesn't make it right. Apart from VW (same drive train) I don't know any other vehicle, petrol or diesel, that burns oil.

It does not sound right at all... was speaking to a mate of mine the other day about this... hes got a 2.0TDI SE 05 - B7 and so far he done 12K... hes never had to top the oil up and i asked him to check the level and its not gone anywhere...

his car went into the garage at 5k for rattle in the dash so the Oil could of been topped up then without his knowledge which he doubts -

The cars going in the a service shortly but i will keep ya posted...

ish.......

just out of intrest ........ is it just the US chaps having the oil issues or its it us lot from europe as well???

Just wondering if it could be anything to do with the set up... etc????

I know you us guys have 91 ron unleaded Petrol / gas fuel which i may be wrong but lead to believe a Petrol A4 can run on, where as in Europe the min ron is 95 which Audi state is the lowest ron???
I know the above is for petrol but could it be simliar case with the diseal grade??

Cheers

I noticed with my 1991 Audi 200 turbo consumed a lot of oil also. I increased the viscosity to 50W (20-50W) and added Winns engine oil conditioner. Consumption dropped immediately and the engine ran much smoother. You will never stop any hi performance engine from consuming oil so you either have to like it or sell it.

Hi Guys

5284 miles - out of Sainsburys and low oil warning light
Stopped at nearest petrol station - and added the last half litre of expensive synth oil - this now totals 1ltr

Seems as tho this could get to be a tad expensive.....now I have to go out an buy the stuff

As the car is new and still got 12000 miles to next service MUST I continue to top up with this long life stuff or can I swap to a relaible aternate brand without invalidating the warranty ?

As on driver has suggested - can I add Winns and use a thicker oil ? - once again what happens with Warranty ?

All answers greatfully received ........
Ps no leaks and only on a really cold start does it puff the slightest smoke

Car is a 2.0 55 plated 2.0 TDI

Unhappy

Just another question - to burn oil I thought oil had to be leaking into the combustion chambers (please understand I have limited knowledge of car engineering) - this usually happens when valve seal are worn and a common diagnosis is black smoke.
Why would this be happening on a brand new car and why do diesels burn more oil than their petrol counterparts ?

Hi Guys
Just another update
Visited main dealer today .......needed to get a touch up stick for a stone chip
Got chatting to the salesman who sold me the car.

Audis official line id that 2.0 tdi's do burn oil - this will settle after first service and as engine ages.
They had just taken a large delivery of 1L bottle of the "long life" oil which is priced at £16:95 a throw.
The service manager expalined that the amount of oil I was burning was to be expected as it was a "turbo-charged " vehicle.
I asked about changing to a thicker viscose oil but he said this would knock the service times down to a standard 10k instead of the 2yera 20k intervals so I wouldn't see any financial benefits.
I mentioned about adding Wynns Diesel Protector - HE SAID THIS WOULD NOT INVALIDATE ANY WARRANTIES AS THEY USED ALL WYNNS PRODUCTS TO FLUSH ENGINES ON SERVICES.
I am going to wait a week or so and add half a can and see if that improves the situation.
Any others heard anything ?

Default Audi A4 2.0 2001 model B6

I have had the problem of burning too much oil, so I did a little test to see how often I have been toping up my oil. It turns out I am managing to do about 230 miles before I need to top up. The car has done 100.000 miles now and it was a company car before I bought it.
Anyway I have taken it to AUDI and they are stripping the engine to find out what it could be at a cost of £400 just for looking at it, and then what ever it cost's to repair.. I reckon it might be the piston rings but who knows what crap they come out with to rip me off. Fingers cross and will get back to you shortly..
