Default Urgent Advice Re Cambelt

I had a cambelt fitted by an independant garage who deals in Audi's and after a week noticed that the engine was a little bit noisier, however car was running fine.

Put car back into garage and they said after spending 3 hours looking at it, and replacing parts, no problem could be found and nothing showed up on the ECU.

Two days later about to pull up at lights and the car died, tried to turn it over and just made a weird sound.

GUTTED, been told by garage that the timing chain from the back of the car has snapped causing the pistons to damage. Been told I need new engine head, timing chain, 20 valves and cost roughly between £1000 - £1500.

Now stuck with decision on what to do as the garage also said they cannot guarantee that the car will be fine after this.

Feel sick, any advise on this matter would be hugely helpful as I am not very techinical and have no idea where to go from here.

Sounds to me like the garage hasnt fited the new cam belt back on correctly
which has caused this..

I would say there trying to fob you off, what timing chain from back of car ?? never heard of that before !!!

Get the car checked by Audi and see what they say and if they think the new belts been fitted wrongly get them to write up a report and go back to inde where you had it done...

If they wont play ball then threaten them with trading standards being called in ...

Let us know how you get on ...

The cambelt drives one camshaft the other shaft is driven by a chain at the rear of both cams on 20 valve engines. It is very easy to time this engine wrong unless you know what you are doing. However these chains are known to fail for various reasons, may be coincidence, difficult one to prove.

Thanks for the quick reply, I am thinking the same as you guys.

I turned up at the garage unannounced today because i was passing, and got a shock when I turned up as the engine was taken apart. I could see that the pistons were bent

Thing is don't know where to go from here or how to prove it.

Ask them to stop repairs and get an independent assessment carried out, RAC or AA.

Told him this morning to go ahead and fix it because a car with no engine is only worth scrap, so we thought we would take the gamble.

Anyways he has now said he doesn't think he can says he will ring around for advice.

I have just logged onto pc to get Audi Dealers number to see what they say.

I am just really angry as feel as though it will be my word against his.

GUTTED!!!!!!!

Think I will also get onto AA or Rac too.

Keep your eyes peeled on Ebay for a engine, ive seen them go for £500 - £1500 before, if you decide to go for a new one off Audi expect £3500 supply only!! I had a similar problem on my 1.8 T piston crumbled due to oil pressure loss but garage sent engine away for full rebuild which cost them £1200 new pistons etc and everythings fine now 8000 miles later so might be worth getting your garage to go along those lines trade price rebuild ?? and they just got to re fit it then ...

Check this one out ?? AUDI A4 2.0 20V TURBO ENGINE 2006 MODEL on eBay, also, Audi, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 05-May-08 09:25:36 BST) ...

I am thinking of going down the line of getting a re-conditioned engine, had a quote for one at £1700 with two year guarantee, but it is in Essex.

Does anybody know of a place I could get a re-condtioned engine in Northwest area???

Thanks
