Default 2003 Audi A4 1.8T - Ignition Coil

Hey guys, I had a serious problem with my Audi today on the way to work. Last night on the way home, the check engine light came on. I figured I would check it out today as it was well past 6 and no local service shops would be open.

So this morning on the way to work, the engine light starts flashing and I seriously lose power (and fuel economy). This was while I was on the freeway, about 10 miles from home, so I kept on to work. When I finally got there, I noticed a very rough idle and a burning smell. After doing some digging it appears this is an ignition coil issue.

My question is, is this something I can repair myself? If not, is it a costly repair?

Please let me know, this is fairly urgent.

Thanks!

T-sport is an unknown quantity at this point
Default

The coil packs are a common thing to go on the 1.8 T .... I had 2 go down on me recently on a trip, loss of power like the car was only running on 3 cylinders...

Ok heres my rough guide on replacing !!!

If you remove the engine cover you will see them plugged in on the top..square looking plug...

You can see which one or more have gone by running the engine and pulling a coil pack out with a pair of insulated plers/grips one at a time .. which should cause the engine to splutter/die when removed.. (Be careful as it will spark (clicking sound) if its working ok ..

The faulty one will appear to make no difference when pulled out and no spark so thats the one that will need replacing ..

They normally cost around £30 ($60) each here in the uk to replace.....

Hope that helps
