Sounds pretty poor to me, mine with 155k on the clock, miles not km, does 42 round town and around 50 on a motorway run at reasonable speeds, try keeping revs below 2k when you accelerate, and only use 1st to get the car moving and try and brake as little as possible lookng well ahead of the cars in front you'll be surprised how little you need to brake, cruising at around 60-65mph my range goes to almost 1000miles, shame I'd run out of country before I got to that distance.
Problems that can cause a drop in mog usually centre around the ambient air temp, (I find round 10 to 15 c is best) clogged air or fuel filter, low tyre pressure, carrying a load of cr*p in your boot, faulty sensors, try and have a VAG comm scan, mine was running fine but the coolant temp sensor was duff, a well known fault, changed it and got better mpg straight away. Hope this helps, Mike |

I had one of these, and I never got below high 40's for high speed motorway driving and low 40's round town. This is a great engine normally, and I would say you have a problem such as a bad MAF sensor or coolant temp sensor. Freezing temperatures do make a difference, but 35 MPG from this car is not at all normal.

Hi
I've got a53 plate Avant same engine and get average 36 thats going brim to brim so quite accurate. It's had new temp sensors and new MAF no difference. I've come to accept that as normal now. It is very consistent so must be OK (had the car 18 months now!!) Cheers Andy |
