Hi, have had this happen now 3 or four times and before going to the dealer ($$$) I wanted to see if anyone else had this problem.
The light goes on randomly. It will stay on for a few days, and through multiple turn ons and offs, then stop being on for days on end, then turn back on and repeat. checked the easy thing first, the gas cap, and it seems to be firmly on, so unless there is a seal there that is leaking on the cap, it is not that. Anyone else had this happen? And found a solution? Thanks |

I've also had this problem and haven't gone to the dealer to check it out yet. But, from what I can gather from a general pattern of when it's happening, it could be just the MAF censor. It tends to go off only when my fiancee puts regular fuel in it instead of 93 octane premium. Since I've been doing that regularly, it's been doing fine.
I have a 2002 A4 3.0, so yours might be different. I'm going to take it in for diagnostics next time it comes on to see what code it's throwing out. |

Thanks for the replies. The place I bought it from sent me to their mechanic and he hooked it up to the computer and got an error code having to do with the sensor on the coolant system. From what he said, the Audi's are supposed to use a red coolant and sometimes people get cheap and use the regular green type. This screws with the sensor and tells it that it isn't warm/heated up yet and can mess up the sensor too. He reset the light and for 2 days it was fine. This morning, after a 20 minute trip and a 2 hour stop, it had a hard time starting (VERY WEIRD)...plenty of juice to the battery but wouldn't catch. Finally it did then ran fine...but with light back on! Haven't tried since.
Anyway, thanks for the ideas...and what do y'all think of what the mechanic told me? 2002 3.0 Quatro 6 speed |

its not due to the coolant..
The more than likley reason will be the temp collant sensor.. it common part costing about £20.00 The below fault will be recorded in VAG-COM. 17698 - - Coolant Temp Sensor at Radiator Outlet (GB3) Singal too Small. P1290 - 002 - Lower limit Exceeded Rick

are you losing coolant? Typically this will happen with a cooling system issue. Ideally you'll see coolant either on the ground or in the engine compartment. I had these codes and it ended up being a head gasket, but even the dealer didn't figure that out. Finally I found it myself.
