Inde Tech are very reasonable they quoted me £750 for the same job. Audi are just having a laugh the unit only costs £500. Or if you are good with the spanners there is a company in Poole that can re-manufacture your unit for £145.

Did they actually do the job for you?

I wouldn't say Audi were having a "laugh". They do have overheads - or do you expect them to fit it for free??

But what kind of warranty do they provide??

You need to be really carefull with the Multitronic, as it really is a specialised beast, and "any old" auto transmission specialists have been regularly proven to be well out of their depths!

Hi Teutonic,

They haven't done the job for me yet but they are probably going to get the job. I will post my feedback when done.

On first impressions they seem like a good independent garage and are all Audi trained technicians.

Re. Audi's overheads
The job is booked at 2.5 hours and the unit is £570 from Audi so that makes £500 per hour towards Audi's overheads! I can not justify that cost so yes i feel they are having a laugh.

I've put the car on our diagnostics (Modis) and get the following fault code F125 transmission range sensor no plausable signal. This was the same fault reading on a VAG-COM.

The actual exchange of the unit is quite an easy job when up on a ramp. If I did decide to go down the Re-manufactured route (the cheapest by far) do these control units need coding to the vehicle?

Thanks Warren.

I see you have a CBR 600FX, great bike I had one for about 2 years. was a great all rounder.

I take it you are referring to Inde-Tech - there have been many positive reports and generally good feedback about these guys. Even if you have to travel a couple of hundred miles, it should be worth it, with the reassurance that you know they will do an excellent job, and for a fair £££.

I'm not too sure exactly what work you are detailing, for 2½ hours labour? If you are sure that it is only 2½, then OK, you're right to be miffed about the extortionate charge. Bear in mind, though, you can usually haggle, even with main dealer prices, as I always do!

OK, but what was the full 5-digit code? Usually, with the basic EOBD/OBD-II fault code readers, they merely just throw one, or maybe two basic "generic" codes. However, VAG-COM should show the generic, AND a few more detailed "manufacturer-specific" codes.

Your Modis scanner - that is very similar to the Snap-On 2500 scanner?? If so, I have had some "issues" with one of them, failing to clear codes properly, and even failing to interrogate certain modules at all.

OK. I don't know about any "recoding", but I would guess that it would need "adaptation", just like throttle bodies do. Surely the VAG-COM should point you in the right direction with that issue.

Yeah, I often think about trading it for something different, but it really is a great little bike, but maybe a touch too cramped for me . . . .

Only VAG-COM or main stealer equipment for adaptations.

Its good to see your coming round to my way of thinking with the "main stealer" quote.

I've seen some ads for VAG-COM leads on ebay. Any feedback on these and where to obtain software??

Thanks

Righty, the VAG-COM software can either be downloaded as "shareware", but with limited functionality, or a licenced copy purchased from approved re-sellers.

The official distributor list linky: Ross-Tech: Distributor List

The leads - be careful which lead you get, as not all work with CAN-BUS, found on the B6 range. The best advice would be to have a thorough shufty on the Ross-Tech site, and confirm exactly the kind of lead you need.

I thought i would add an update now the job is done. Inde-Tech did the taking off, fitting and gearbox oil. Autotek did the repair on the ECU. Total job came to around £600 compared to Audi's £1500 so i would recommend both these companies to anyone.

Inde-Tech are independent Audi specialists who specialise in Multitronic inde-tech - Home Page 01908 821222

Autotek specialise in ECU repair Welcome to Autotek - The Auto Electronics SPECIALISTS

And me! Independent gearbox specialist says it is the range sensor inside the gearbox and comes as part of the ECU. It gradually becomes more frequent but is really a fault in the sensor circuits and not a fault that affects the box working when display goes back to normal. Cost to fix over £1K! Still not decided what to do.

Tell if fluid low if drive does not come in within two seconds when cold after moving to D. Popssibly gets better when box hot and oil expands.
