Quattro Noise

Hi new here. thought i'd just post a problem i have. My car is an 2002 A4 1.8T quattro sport. If i am travelling at say 50mph in 5th gear and i floor the throttle,when i get between 60 and 70 mph i get a rumble noise through the car.Then when i get over 70mph it stops.Also when i pull away on a right or lefthand lock i get a rumble too.My audi dealer said it was the bearing in the propshaft.So i had it reconditioned but the problem is still there. Then i was told by another audi dealer that all quattros make the noise on a lock when pulling away when they get older.Mine has done 77000 miles.Can anyone help please?

My 1999 A6 is currently in the shop for the same problem. The shop is working on it in conjunction with a transmission shop. So far they have narrowed the problem to the CV axle assembly or the front differential. So far its been a tough one to pinpoint because the noise and vibration don't occur when the car is running on the hoist. I'll let you know when I find out.

My car did make the noise up on the inspection ramp. But when they took the propshaft off the gearbox the noise went away. so i think it might be the rear diff.But i don't know why it makes a noise when the car is on lock if its to do with the rear of the car.You would think it would be the front diff or driveshafts/cv joints.But they seem to be ok.Plus it only seems to get louder the warmer the car is. for example in the mornings when i first pull away i don't seem to get it at all until i've been driving for a while.Many thanks for reply please let me know what you find out.

The quattro setup will make noise pulling away while turning like a rumble and a vibration thoughout the car. This is normal in most cars. some times it becomes excessive due to the wear on the torsen diff and the rear end. Check to see if the prop shaft seal is leaking

Well, the shop is still inspecting my 1999 A6. After consulting with a transmission specialist, they think the problem has to do more with the driveshaft center bearing or the torsion differential. They started to open up these areas yesterday to find out for sure. Im hoping one of these is the problem since the labor is going to get expensive if they tear it apart for nothing. I'll let you know when we find out for sure.

One other thing.....the prop shaft seal was leaking slightly so this might be related to the problem.

I finally got a call this morning from the shop and the problem was a worn binding joint (at least thats what he called it)at the front of the driveshaft. I think he might be referring to the U joint at the front of the drive shaft. All of the lube had leaked out and the joint was in very rough condition. The stupid thing is that he said the u joints in most Audis, BMWs, etc can't be replaced separately from the driveshaft, unlike most American cars. So instead of buying an entire driveshaft, he recommended having the problem area remanufactured. The grand total comes to $650, so if this fixes the problem I think I am pretty lucky not to spend more. I'll let you know if it fixes the problem for sure.

I never go to the Audi dealer here! Only go there for warranty work. Here in Minneapolis, the two Audi dealers are owned by the same people so they can charge anything they want. I found a great independent Audi/VW/BMW/Mercedes mechanic that charges much less an hour and is very up front with me about repairs that should and shouldn't be done. A good mechanic is worth so much!
