I recently purchased a 2005 A4 1.8T Special Edition. Very nice stereo ("Symphony"), with a SAT (Satellite?) button on it. . . .

What's involved with getting set-up for Satellite radio? Is it worth it?

Also, how would I determine what type of satellite radio I can use? Could I use Sirius or XM? Is one better than the other?

Thanks!

you have the symphonyII head unit not symphony. symphony is pre-2002 model year.

symphonyI

either your car came with sat radio installed or it didnt. if it didnt the dealer can install it. look on your window sticker to see. after that, theres a monthly fee for it

edit: on second thought.. if you have a "SAT" button you probably have it installed. if you press the button it should come up with "preview" and you can mess around a bit. you'll have to find out which company the SAT radio is and call them to start the billing process.

when you order a car from the factory, you can pick which one you want. if you have it installed already, your window sticker will say "XM Sat radio" or "Sirius Sat radio" if you on don't have it, you can pick.

good luck with the new car. drive safe

Thanks for your reply. I hit the "SAT" button, and the display said, "NO SAT RADIO". I checked the window sticker - - the "pre-wiring" has been done, so I presume it's satellite "ready". . . .

You're right, I'll stick with my iPod - - am using it with a cassette adapter, and the sound is great!

Thanks!

i got a new 05 SE as well - tell me - did you get the premium sound, what was sticker price for the option? If it was the 1000 audio upgrade , and it says xm i cant see how it DOESNT have it becuase the upgraded system seems to me that it automatically comes with xm. maybe im wrong, either way if you get it going call xm directly (i had to my dealer forgot) and they will give you the free 3 month audi promotion. glad to have xm back ill tell ya, missed it alot after I got rid of my pioneer last year.

Poeple always compare the ipod to xm.....its a different breed...if you want to bring along your music collecion ok get an ipod, but if you want new stuff, 100 digital, no extra devices, 120 stations even if you only listen to 10....xm is your friend, but I dont think ipod is the way to go over xm.....just different route

good luck...

love my se , ive put 11 miles on it LOL

the "audio package" is $1000 and comes with either XM or sirius depending on which one they installed. the audio package also comes with the bose speaker system.

fair enough... i had XM in my allroad for a few months.. wasn’t my thing. i listen to regular radio and watch MTV.. and download the new music myself (legally.. of course )... personally i prefer making playlists of exactly what i want to listen to .. i can see how people like sat radio just a personal preference

I bought an '05 S4 just before Xmas with Premium sound/XM and to be honest I think that I'd rather have not got it.

I live in West Los Angeles and keep experiencing dropouts and loss of signal, in fact last week-end I drove to San Francisco and for the best part of 200 miles on I5 I had no signal. I took the car into the dealer and after a day they couldn't find any fault codes on the unit and the antenna checked out OK, although on a test ride they experienced the drop-out. Eventually, with the help of Audi's Tech line (only one guy knows this stuff) the y found another diagnostic and reset something. Now it seems better (after 1/2 a day) but the jury's out as it still get s "no signal" on my communte down PCH through Malibu.

If the radio is OK and the XM reception is as poor as I've experienced Iwould say go for some kind of MP3 player, IPod, Phatnoise etc etc.

I've had XM installed in my A4 for about 8 months. I can see how an Ipod is nice to have - especially with the wireless transmitter - I don't like having wires all over the place. But I gotta tell you XM is awsome for long trips. I drive back & forth to Canada several times a year with very few drop outs. The only places I have trouble are when anything really big blocks the south western horizon - like a montain or really large building. XM supposably transmitts terrestrially in addition to the satellites. Anyway, since I don't have time to trool the web for new music, XM works for me.

Back to the situation where the car has been wired for SAT but not installed, can you choose between XM and Sirius or has it been predetermined by Audi?

What is necessary to install - all new radio system or just programming?

Just curious - I have this situtation.

i have ipods in both my allroad and jetta... (well one ipod for 2 cars.. ) they're both hardwired but you cant see any wires.. clean installs. FM transmitters are not that great if you live in a busy area.

not 100% sure but i think you can choose. when you order a car from the factory you can pick which one you want, so i'm sure you can get eitehr one.

i think the sat radio is just an external hidden box - could be wrong but i think you keep the same head unit
