First of all great forum, I've been doing a lot of reading, this is my first post.
I bought my 2000 A4 1.8T a couple months ago. When I bought it the owner did show me that the driver information center had some bad lines in it. No big deal could still read it fine. So as of this week, when I go to start the car, it will show me the push in clutch message, but when I start it the display goes completely blank. My concern here is that I'll miss out on warnings/messages. I did search around some but I didn't see any fixes that apply to my problem. Does anyone know of a way to try and repair this or have any ideas how to replace and a rough guess of the cost? I'm not afraid to tear into it myself, in other cars I've done everything up to and including engine swaps.
I have had this same problem, and the Audi Dealer says that they have to replace the whole instrument cluster. It costs between $800 and $1600/US for the cluster, and then you still have to have them install it. They say that Audi still hasn't found the cause of why the display dims or goes out, but they are working on it. They also say that if a new instrument cluster is put in, and that the driver's information display stops working, that they are not responsible for the replacement cost for another cluster.
Cluster lines and pixel issue are a well know problem which now you can have the display screen replaced for around $150-$200 but in this case I will say you have turned it off by following Joseisi instruction will turn it back on.

I have tried to push the button on the control switch, but after my display gets going in the morning, it fades out completely. It will show a red color, but it will not show any information. If I have an alert for the coolant, fuel, etc., it will not show up, but the top of the display will turn yellow or red, depending on the type of the alert. Docurley, you said that the display itself could be changed out for $150 - $200, Where can this be done? I have talked to the dealership, and to some audi service shops in my area, but they still say that the whole instrument cluster has to be changed out. I'm from the Western Slope of Colorado, and am really in a pickle when I have the alerts go off. Can you please help? Also check out the thread about coolant runoff.

That is exactly what I was looking for, and I've already talked to them. They say that they can and will fix my display for me, and that it is a common problem that they get alot. Thanks again for the information, and your help in this matter.
