Audi A4 manual gearbox whine

Hi, my 1999 A4 Avant has a whining noise coming from the gearbox. When it's in neutral and I depress the clutch the whining stops. When I put it in gear the whining increases with the revs of the engine. Any ideas which component in the gearbox is at fault? Could it be the bearings?

How easy is it to remove a gearbox?

My B5 Quattro has the same problem, It only makes the noise in 1st gear. My mechanic diagnosed it to be a broken tooth in 1st gear. I have been quoted $500 to remove & replace the transmission + parts.
For my case $350 for mainshaft & $150 for 1st gear.

Have you checked the fluids in the gearbox or rear diff? My first vehicle had a bad rear diff leak and it would whine when it was low.
