A few weeks back my A4 begin to misfire. I brought it into the local VW repair shop. I was told that one of the exhaust valves was stuck. He said it looked like my cooling fan was not running properly, causing my engine to run hotter then it should, causing my oil to break down and cause a slugging condition. He recommends buying a used engine and doing an engine swap. This is my winter car and only gets driven 4-6 months of the year so I don't want to spend much money on a fix. Does anyone know of any way to free-up the stuck valve? How hard is it to take of the valve covers to see if anything can be done?

a long high temp drive will loosen up the valve. if you get it loose seafoam it after to clean the motor out. also if you seafoam it make sure u have a vag-com, it might turn on the misfire code.

The Seafoam treatment is great, i'd recommend using it. It's also great for removing sludge from your oil system. I put in a third can in with my oil and run my car for about ten minutes before every oil change. U'd be surprised what comes out.
