Default How to tell you need a new timing belt?

Is there a way to tell when the timing belt needs to be replaced? Or do i just need it changed every 60k miles or so

It used to be 60K miles or every 4 years, whichever comes first.

Take off the top timing cover and examine the belt for wear, measure width (i.e wear limit 22mm on TDI upto 99).

also have a look at the belt to see if there are lines visible on the flat face of the belt,if there is then the belt is due very shortly

I think one way of looking at this is, if you arent sure if it's needed or not, then it probably is, just to be safe. Belts breaking can cost a fortune for repairs. 20 valves. not good!

Mack.
